Corset making today

What are the secrets of making a corset today?
What are the secrets of making a corset today?
Today’s modern corset owes much to those corsets that came before it. Although we no longer look for excessive shaping or tiny waists, the principles of corset design and construction remain the same, and modern corsets are cut and made to patterns that have existed for many years. The difference with today’s corset is that it is made in comfortable, breathable fabric and uses steel boning instead of traditional bone, horn or wood.

The corset fabric

Whether you’re looking for a corset to show off to the world, or something to wear underneath a party dress to give you the right shape, you’ll want a fabric that both feels and looks good. Today’s corsets are often made with luxurious fabrics such as silk, satin and brocades as well as lightweight, comfortable fabrics such as cotton. Designers and corsetieres use their knowledge of how fabric works to ensure that the garment is both strong and easy to wear.

Corset boning

Where once whale bone was the main material used for corset stays, modern corsets use flexible steel boning. In fact, in many corsets, two types of boning are used – flexible boning to enhance shape and ensure comfort and some structured, inflexible boning for support. Today’s corset construction is highly evolved, so the channels used for the boning are exactly the right size and allow the boning to do its job properly. The fact that corsets are boned with steel shouldn’t put you off buying one – you will be surprised at how easy they are to wear. !!<

Corset shape

The manufacture of corsets has always been about creating a certain shape and corset design has changed over the years, depending on what shape is currently fashionable. Today, you can buy an over-bust corset, or a under-bust corset - or cincher. The one you choose will depend on where and how you’re going to wear your corset and on the shape you want to achieve. The modern corset is made to give you a waist reduction of between two and four inches and you can adjust the fastening on your corset to give you the shape and comfort you need.

Corset finish

Where the corset was once just a piece of under-garment, it is now a luxury item and the finishes and designs of today’s corsets reflect that change. Patterned fabrics, lace, bows, buttons and frills are all part of making your corset a truly individual piece of clothing – one that you’ll feel great wearing and will be one of the truly “wow” pieces in your wardrobe.
