Have you ever noticed

Have you ever noticed (whether it be your friends, family...gasp! even yourself) that most people have a secret-self? Either we’re underscoring our success, over-inflating our current lack thereof, or making things up completely (‘Oh I’ve done so much travelling in my time’...no one needs to know that that only means I’ve taken 7 road trips and have yet to board a plane).

I have...and I do. My question is: why?

Why do we feel the need to portray something that we’re not? Who are we trying to protect? Ourselves from the judgement of others? Or others from us? And why does it matter so?

The ‘finity’ (that’s not an actual word; I’m aware) of life should remind us that we’ve only got one, and it’s short. And in order for it to be the best it can be, we should be nothing less than honest to ourselves and to others. And if they don’t get you, then they aren’t worth your time or concern.

So if you’ll do me this one favour, I promise to do the same for you: next time you introduce yourself, tell it like it is.
